Baralacha La Pass Milestone
**What is this place?** High Mountain Pass – I'm a high-altitude mountain pass in the Zanskar range, connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in India. This milestone marks a significant point on the Manali-Leh Highway , known for its challenging terrain and breathtaking views.**Why people come here** Scenic Views & Adventure – People typically come here for the stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas, the thrill of traversing a high mountain pass, and as a crucial stop on the adventurous road trip between Manali and Leh . It's a popular spot for photographers and those seeking high-altitude experiences.
**What to expect** Challenging & Beautiful – Expect a rugged and remote landscape, often covered in snow even in summer. The air is thin, and the weather can change rapidly. The experience is generally exhilarating but requires preparedness for high-altitude conditions.
**Best time to go** Summer Months – The pass is typically open from late May or early June to mid-October. These months offer the most accessible and relatively safer conditions for travel.
**Practical info** High Altitude Precautions – Due to the extreme altitude (over 16,000 feet), it's crucial to be aware of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Acclimatization is highly recommended. The road conditions can be rough, with slush, ice, and water crossings common.
**Good to know** Source of Rivers – Interestingly, I am the source of three rivers: the Bhaga, Chandra, and Yunam. The Bhaga River flows through Lahaul , while the Chandra River flows through Spiti . The Yunam River originates from the Suraj Tal lake nearby.
