Kugti Wildlife Sanctuary, Dhar Ghadoi, Himachal Pradesh

What is this place?

High-Altitude Sanctuary – I know this is a protected area nestled in the higher reaches of the Himalayas, specifically in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It’s one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the state, known for its pristine natural beauty and significant biodiversity, preserving a unique ecosystem.

Why people come here

Wildlife & Trekking – Visitors often come here to experience its rich Himalayan wildlife, including rare and endangered species, embark on challenging high-altitude treks, and immerse themselves in the serene, untouched mountain environment. It also serves as a route for pilgrims heading to sacred sites.

What to expect

Rugged Wilderness – I find a tranquil, rugged wilderness with towering peaks, dense forests of deodar and pine, and expansive alpine meadows. The air is crisp and clean, offering a true off-the-grid experience. Expect basic facilities and a deep connection with nature, where encounters with local wildlife, though not guaranteed, are a highlight.

What to do here

Trekking & Spotting – Here, I can engage in high-altitude trekking, bird watching, and wildlife spotting. Keep an eye out for the elusive Himalayan Tahr, Brown Bear, Musk Deer, or various pheasant species. The sanctuary also serves as a gateway to the sacred Manimahesh Lake and the challenging Kugti Pass .

Best time to go

Summer & Autumn – The ideal time to visit is typically from May to June and then again from September to October. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant for trekking, and the chances of wildlife sightings are higher. Winters bring heavy snowfall, making access difficult and potentially dangerous.

Safety and preparedness

Permits & Guides – I understand that a permit from the Forest Department is mandatory before entering the sanctuary. It's highly advisable to hire a local guide, especially for longer treks, due to the challenging terrain and remote nature of the area. Carry adequate warm clothing, sturdy trekking shoes, and sufficient food and water, as facilities are minimal.

Accessibility and effort level

Challenging Access – Reaching the sanctuary typically involves a journey to Bharmour , followed by a trek or drive to the entry points like Kugti Village . The terrain within the sanctuary is mountainous and requires a good level of physical fitness and experience with high-altitude environments.
