Historical & Spiritual Roots
Kalinga War Site – Dhauli is believed to be the battlefield of the Kalinga War, fought around 261 BCE. The immense bloodshed here led Emperor Ashoka to renounce violence and embrace the path of Dharma (righteousness).Ashokan Edicts – I find that the ancient Ashokan Rock Edict , carved into a large rock face, are among the earliest surviving evidence of his change of heart. They convey his message of peace, justice, and compassion.
Peace Pagoda – The dazzling white Dhauli Shanti Stupa , or Peace Pagoda, was built in the 1970s by the Japan Buddha Sangha. It serves as a modern monument to global peace and brotherhood.
