What to expect
Uplifting Trek – You should expect a long, uphill trek of about 12-14 kilometers from the base camp in Katra to the main shrine. The path is well-maintained but can be physically demanding. The atmosphere is consistently devotional, filled with chants and hymns, creating a truly uplifting experience amidst stunning mountain views.
Best time to go
Spring/Autumn – I find that the most pleasant times to undertake the pilgrimage are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months. The weather is generally mild and comfortable for trekking. Winters can be very cold, and monsoons bring heavy rainfall, which might make the trek challenging.
Practical info
Yatra Essentials – The pilgrimage can take anywhere from a full day to two days, depending on your pace and mode of transport. I recommend obtaining a 'Yatra Parchi' (registration slip) from the Yatra Registration Counter in Katra before starting your journey; it's mandatory. Along the route, you'll find numerous facilities like food stalls, rest points, and medical aid.
Visitor etiquette
Respectful Conduct – When visiting, I advise dressing modestly, covering your shoulders and knees, as a sign of respect. Photography is generally not allowed inside the main cave shrine. Please remember to remove your shoes before entering the temple premises and maintain a calm, reverent demeanor throughout your visit.
Good to know
Travel Options – Besides walking, you have options like ponies, palanquins (pithoos), and even helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat , which is still a few kilometers from the main shrine. Booking these services, especially helicopters, well in advance is a good idea, particularly during peak seasons.
