Historic Prison – I know this as a colonial-era prison located in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It now stands as a revered National Memorial, a silent witness to India's arduous struggle for independence.

Historical Background

British Construction – This formidable structure was built by the British between 1896 and 1906. It was designed specifically for solitary confinement, with seven wings radiating from a central watchtower, each cell intended to isolate prisoners from one another. Kala Pani – It famously housed numerous Indian freedom fighters and political prisoners, earning it the dreaded moniker 'Kala Pani' or Black Water, due to the severe isolation and harsh conditions.

National Memorial – Today, Cellular Jail serves as a poignant National Memorial, dedicated to the countless patriots who endured immense suffering and made the ultimate sacrifice for India's freedom. Explore Wings – As you explore, you can walk through the distinct seven wings, each containing individual cells designed to break the spirit of the inmates. Freedom Fighters' Cells – I recommend visiting the cells of prominent freedom fighters like V.D. Savarkar, which offer a glimpse into their harsh confinement. Gallows – You can also see the gallows, a chilling reminder of the executions that took place here. Light & Sound Show – In the evenings, a captivating Light & Sound Show narrates the compelling history of the jail and the stories of its inmates.

Crowd Levels – The site can attract significant crowds, especially during peak tourist season and for the popular evening Light & Sound Show.
