108 Shiv Mandir, Kalna

What is this place?

Temple Complex – I'm the 108 Shiv Mandir, a unique temple complex located in Kalna , West Bengal. I feature 108 identical miniature terracotta Shiva temples arranged in two concentric circles. This architectural marvel is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Significance & Appeal

Devotion & Heritage – I hold immense spiritual significance as a major site for Shiva worship, attracting devotees for pilgrimage, especially during festivals like Shivaratri. Built in 1809 by Maharaja Teja Chandra Bahadur of Bardhaman , my 108 temples represent a profound act of devotion, with the number 108 being sacred in Hinduism. My distinctive architecture and historical roots also draw history enthusiasts, photographers, and those interested in Bengal's rich temple heritage.

What to expect

Serene & Unique – You can expect a serene and spiritually uplifting atmosphere as you walk among the 108 temples. The symmetrical arrangement creates a visually striking experience. While usually peaceful, I can get crowded during major festivals and special occasions.

Best time to go

Cooler Months – The best time to visit me is during the cooler months, from October to March. The weather is pleasant, making it comfortable to explore the complex. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying the tranquility.

Practical info

General Access – I am generally open during daylight hours. There is no specific entry fee, but donations are welcome. Please allow about 1-2 hours to fully explore and appreciate my unique architecture and spiritual ambiance. Parking is usually available nearby.

Good to know

Architectural Marvel – My design is said to resemble a japamala (rosary beads), with the temples arranged to facilitate circumambulation. The outer circle contains 74 temples, and the inner circle has 34. The alternating black and white Shiva lingams within the temples are also a notable feature.

Visitor etiquette

Respectful Conduct – As a religious site, visitors are requested to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Please remove your footwear before entering the temple premises. Maintain silence and respect the sanctity of the place. Photography is generally permitted, but always be mindful of devotees and the sacred environment.

Facilities for visitors

Basic Amenities – Basic facilities like parking are available. There might be small stalls selling flowers or offerings outside the complex. Washrooms may be available in the vicinity, but it's advisable to be prepared.
