Engineering Marvel – I am the Falkirk Wheel, a unique rotating boat lift in central Scotland. I connect the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, allowing boats to travel between different water levels. I am the only rotating boat lift of my kind in the world.
Why people come here
Unique Experience – Visitors come to witness a modern engineering marvel in action. Many enjoy taking a boat trip on me, experiencing the lift firsthand. I am a popular spot for those interested in industrial heritage, canal systems, and innovative design.
What to expect
Engaging Visit – You can expect to see boats being lifted or lowered between the canals. The atmosphere is generally lively, especially during operating hours. There are visitor facilities, including a café and gift shop. I am suitable for families, engineering enthusiasts, and general tourists.
Historical background
Modern Heritage – I opened in 2002, marking a new chapter in Scotland's canal history. I was designed to reconnect the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, which had been separated for decades. My construction was a key part of the Millennium Link project.
Key highlights
Boat Trips – The main highlight is experiencing a boat trip through me, which includes being lifted 35 metres (115 feet) into the air. You can also explore the visitor centre, learn about my design, and see other features like the aqueduct and canal basin.
Practical info
Operating Hours – My operating hours vary seasonally, so checking ahead is advisable. Boat trips typically run at scheduled times. Parking is generally available on-site. The site is largely accessible, though specific access for boat trips should be confirmed.
Good to know
Water Levels – I lift boats between two canals that are at different heights, eliminating the need for a traditional lock system. My design is inspired by a Celtic double-headed axe. I use the same amount of electricity to turn as boiling eight kettles.
