Golghar, Patna
What is this place?
Historical Granary – This is a fascinating historical granary, built in the shape of a massive beehive. It was originally intended to be a storehouse for grains to prevent famine, following the devastating famine of 1770 in Bihar. I find its unique architecture quite impressive.
Why people come here
Panoramic Views & History – People primarily visit Golghar to climb its spiral staircase and enjoy panoramic views of the city of Patna and the Ganges River . It's also a place to appreciate a significant piece of colonial-era engineering and history.
What to expect
Scenic Climb – You can expect a gentle but continuous climb up the outer spiral staircase to reach the top. The views from above are quite rewarding, offering a different perspective of Patna. It's a relatively calm spot, popular with locals and tourists alike.
Historical background
18th Century Engineering – Golghar was constructed in 1786 by Captain John Garstin of the Bengal Engineers, under the direction of Governor-General Warren Hastings. Its design was meant to allow grain to be poured in from the top and taken out from the bottom, though it was never fully utilized for its intended purpose due to structural issues.
Key highlights
Architectural Marvel – The distinctive beehive shape and the massive dome are the main highlights.
Spiral Staircase – The two spiral staircases on either side, which converge at the top, are an experience in themselves.
Panoramic Views – From the summit, I can see the expansive Ganges River and much of Patna .
Best time to visit
Cooler Months & Evenings – The cooler months, typically October to March, are ideal for visiting. Early mornings or late afternoons are also recommended to avoid the midday heat and to catch pleasant light for photography.
How much time to spend
1-2 Hours – I'd say you'll need about 1 to 2 hours to comfortably climb to the top, enjoy the views, and explore the immediate surroundings.
Practical info
Entry & Accessibility – There is a nominal entry fee. The climb involves many steps, so it might be challenging for those with mobility issues. Parking is usually available nearby.
