Chennai Lighthouse

What is this place?

Landmark Lighthouse – I am the iconic Chennai Lighthouse, a significant landmark located on Marina Beach in Chennai. I have been guiding ships along the Bay of Bengal for decades.

Why people come here

Panoramic Views – Many visitors come to me for the breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and the vast Bay of Bengal. I am one of the few lighthouses in India with an elevator, making the ascent accessible. Historical Significance – I also attract those interested in maritime history and architecture, as I stand as a testament to navigational technology and design.

What to expect

Elevated Experience – Here, you can expect an elevated experience, literally, as an elevator takes you to the top. The viewing gallery offers an expansive vista, often breezy and providing a unique perspective of Chennai. Crowds & Atmosphere – The atmosphere is generally lively, especially during evenings and weekends, with families and tourists enjoying the views. The area around my base can be quite busy due to my location on Marina Beach .

Historical background

Modern Construction – The current Chennai Lighthouse, which I am, was constructed in 1976 and became operational in 1977. I am the fourth lighthouse to stand in Chennai, with previous ones dating back to the 18th century, showcasing the city's long maritime history. Automated Beacon – I am a fully automated lighthouse, equipped with modern navigational aids, and stand as a symbol of Chennai's coastal identity.

Key highlights

  1. Observation Deck – My primary highlight is the observation deck at the top, offering a 360-degree view. From here, you can clearly see the stretch of Marina Beach , the city's urban landscape, and the endless sea.
  2. Architectural Design – My unique triangular, unpainted concrete tower is also a point of interest, standing distinctly against the sky.

Best time to go

Evenings & Cooler Months – I suggest visiting me during the late afternoon or early evening to catch the sunset over the Bay of Bengal, or to see the city lights begin to twinkle. The cooler months from October to March are generally more pleasant for a visit.

How much time to spend

Quick Visit – A typical visit to my observation deck, including the ascent and descent, usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes. This allows ample time to soak in the views and take photographs.

Practical info

Timings & Entry – I am generally open to visitors during specific hours, which can vary. It's advisable to check the current operating times before planning your visit. There is usually a nominal entry fee. Accessibility – Access to my top is via an elevator, making me accessible to most visitors. Parking is generally available around the Marina Beach area, though it can be crowded.

Good to know

Unique Elevator – I am notable for being the only lighthouse in Chennai, and one of the few in India, equipped with an elevator for public access to the top. Coastal Landmark – I serve not just as a navigational aid but also as a prominent coastal landmark and a popular recreational spot for both locals and tourists.
